The National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) participated in the second Speaker’s Roundtable meeting with the 12th Parliament from 17th to 19th October 2019 in Mombasa. The Speaker’s Roundtable meetings enables the private sector to conduct structured engagement with both Houses of Parliament (the National Assembly and the Senate). Building on the success of the previous Speakers’ Roundtable meeting, this year’s focus was on identifying and harnessing legislative interventions that would catalyze social and economic transformation and growth.
During the meeting Mr. Wachira, the CEO NPCK, encouraged members of parliament to work closely with the private sector in identifying ways of transforming the agricultural sector and increase food security. He said that close partnership between the two will go a long way in unlocking the potential of the big 4 Agenda in supporting the growth of the agriculture.
The meeting also discussed among other things, ways of increasing public-private partnerships, enhancing access to credit by the private sector, tax reforms required to increase Kenya’s competitiveness, multiple and conflicting licensing requirements as well as strengthening the Parliament’s role in its oversight role of policy implementation.
