Nyeri County is located in the central region of the country. It covers an area of 3337 Km2. Out of this, 758.5 km2 is arable. It borders Laikipia County to the north, Kirinyaga County to the east, Murang’a County to the south, Nyandarua County to the west, and Meru County to the northeast. Irish potatoes are one of the major food crops in the county where it is grown in all the eight sub counties. However the main growing areas are Kieni east and Kieni west sub counties where it is commercially grown. In other sub counties most of the farmers grow it for food security. The average acreage under potatoes in the last 4 years (2016-2019) is 12474 ha with an average production of 74653 tons.
Currently projects running in the county are ASDSP programme which focuses on trainings on seed production and ware potato production, ssupporting structures and policies. KCSAP on the other hand is capacity building farmers on practicing climate smart agriculture, technology, innovation, management practices(TIMPS) and support common interest groups(CIG) and vulnerable and marginalized groups(VMG) in seed and ware potato production. Small Holder Irrigation and Value Addition Project(SIVAP) is capacity building on potato production, utilization as well as water harvesting for potato production.NPCK is working with farmer cooperatives on collective sourcing of inputs. It has also partnered with the County Government, ASDSP and KCSAP in developing the County Potato Strategy.
