ABOUT SOLIDARIDAD

Solidaridad is an international civil society organization (CSO) with 55 years of experience in developing solutions that create resilient communities and sustainable supply chains. We work across value chains to make sustainability the norm, by supporting the transition to an inclusive economy that ensures sustainable livelihoods, fair wages, and production in balance with nature.

Guided by our producer-first approach, we champion sustainable land use, contribute to improved working conditions and livelihoods, and ensure food and nutrition security while strengthening producer organizations. We bring together supply chain players and engage them with innovative solutions to

enhance production and drive the transition to economies that maximize the benefits for all.

Solidaridad operates across East and Central Africa in agricultural, industry, and extractive supply chains. Through a combination of boots and brains on the ground, interactive dialogue, community-based initiatives, lobbying and advocacy, and public-private partnerships, we champion production that is in balance with nature, enabling business environments, market uptake, and supportive business ecosystems to scale sustainable and inclusive supply chains and trade. We support producer organizations in promoting the sustainable production of specific commodities.

OUR STRATEGY – RECLAIMING SUSTAINABILITY

Solidaridad’s strategy aims to empower farmers and other producers to lead in true sustainability. As companies increasingly adopt certifications and ethical labels, the meaning of sustainability has been diluted. True sustainability cannot exist when producers live in poverty and natural resources are mismanaged. We aim to reclaim this concept, focusing on prosperity, inclusivity, and production in balance with nature. A triple bottom line, and for  Solidaridad: farmers first.

As a global organization with boots and brains on the ground, we are working throughout whole supply chains to make genuine sustainability the norm. The next decade is critical for establishing a new economy. An economy that works for all and balances local development with globalization, a concept we call ‘locality,’ which requires renewed ownership by farmers and workers.

THE RECLAIM SUSTAINABILITY! PROGRAMME FRESH FOOD PRODUCTS

The RECLAIM Sustainability! Fresh Food Products project targets Horticulture (Fruits, vegetables, and food products) farmers, horticulture organizations and umbrella bodies, Civil Society Organizations, policy and decision makers, local and international consumers, and horticulture (Fruits and vegetables) traders and exporters.

The project’s objective is to achieve Inclusive, sustainable, and responsible supply and value chains in which the interests, voices, and rights of growers, workers (m/f), and communities are justly represented, acknowledged and heard to ensure the conservation of natural resources, decent work, fair value distribution, and sustainable consumption..

RECLAIM Sustainability! programme targets to improve the sector’s policy environment through increased adoption and enforcement of new and appropriate measures such as decisions, policies, and tax regimes by the Government and private sector to ensure farmers receive fair value for their products by 2025. Similarly, new trade models that guarantee horticulture farmers better prices for their produce will be developed, and tested while new regulations and guidance will be developed and institutionalized to enhance safe production and fair trade, which allows Kenyan farmers to access competitive and export markets.
