The National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) has been at the forefront of promoting potato farming through Farmer Field Days across key potato-growing counties, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Meru, Nandi, and Nakuru. These field days have been game-changers, equipping farmers with vital knowledge on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to enhance productivity and boost incomes.
The initiative has successfully brought together various stakeholders in the potato value chain, including soil testing experts, seed producers, fertilizer and agrochemical companies, irrigation specialists, processors, off-takers, and policymakers. Through collaboration, we have created success stories by conducting practical farm demonstrations that showcase improved farming techniques.
Through hands-on demonstrations, farmers learn best practices such as adopting quality seed potato, soil testing, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling. The NPCK team, research institutions, and industry partners provide practical insights, ensuring farmers adopt modern, efficient, and sustainable farming techniques.

At the ongoing field days, we have experienced an overwhelming turnout of farmers eager to gain knowledge and improve their farming practices. It has been inspiring to witness large crowds attentively learning and actively engaging in the sessions. The average attendance has been over 500 farmers per field day per site.

In Nyandarua, Laikipia, Meru, Nandi, and Nakuru, where we have conducted these training sessions, we have observed positive transformations. Many farmers are now transitioning to certified seeds and adopting improved storage methods, significantly reducing post-harvest losses.
