The potato sector holds significant economic, social, and environmental value, contributing to food security, rural development, and sustainable agricultural practices. Recognizing this importance, NPCK is working closely with stakeholders like the Agriculture Food Authority (AFA) and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to address existing gaps in potato trade promotion and develop market-driven standards and traceability guidelines. These initiatives not only aim to improve access to international markets but also ensure the delivery of high-quality products to local consumers while promoting sustainable resource use.
By implementing robust standards and modern traceability measures, such as digital record-keeping and blockchain, NPCK and the stakeholders are enhancing transparency and safety within the potato value chain. These efforts will create new economic opportunities for farmers, elevate product quality, and support the adoption of environmentally friendly practices. For example, international fast-food chains like KFC and other processors have specific requirements for potato size, quality, and traceability, which could be met through these improved systems, allowing Kenyan farmers to tap into lucrative markets. In partnership with ASARECA and KALRO, NPCK conducted training sessions in Murungaru Ward (Nyandarua County) and in Njoro and Molo Wards (Nakuru County) on potato quality standards and contract farming to enhance farmers’ ability to meet diverse market requirements.
Continued collaboration among stakeholders from input and service providers and processors will be vital in driving growth, boosting trade, and building a resilient and prosperous potato industry in Kenya.
A section of the training on potato quality standards and contract farming in Nyandarua County is being conducted by Ms.Sarafina Mugo, NPCK Marketing Officer.
