ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENT OF POTATO FARMER GROUPS AND COOPERATIVES

 NPCK has embarked on conducting a need assessment for farmer groups and cooperatives. The exercise will help in establishing their status quo which includes current gaps, their strengths and areas of improvement to make them effective and sustainable. The Organization Capacity Assessment (OCS) focuses on 4 components for farmer group assessment namely: group governance, operations and management; human resources development; financial management; and external relations. The assessment is ward based and brings together a minimum of five groups. During the meetings, farmers are also trained on NPCK’s Viazi Soko platform that helps farmers query and receive seed potato information, access to inputs, extension, pest and disease advisory, weather information, soil testing and mechanization services. A sensitization on importance of legalizing the groups into marketing groups is done. The groups that participated in the capacity assessment include: Umande Potato growing, Mwaura Organic, Daiga Kwinyitia Women, Faith Ruai Kenya, Nyakio Daiga Women Group, Mwireri Mwiruti, Mbuuru Mwioko Group, Sirimon Livelihood advancement SHG and Muungano Nginyii in Umande ward Meru County.Kesenkwen SHG, Kapnyemis Kosyin SHG, Matelkok SHG, Lessos Seed Potato Multipiliers, Aldai Agroecological Service Providers CBO, Chepketemon Sanet, Boi Women Group and Kesogon Irish Potato Farmers Group in Ollesoos and Kobujoi ward in Nandi County and Goodwill  Selfhelp group, Mwangaza Farmers, Oljororok CFA Group,Muge ni Mutare Group, and Pillar Self Help Group in Oljoroolok Nyandarua County.
