The National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Laikipia County Government to enhance potato farming in the region. This partnership is part of the Kenya Sustainable Potato Initiative (KSPI) Project, which is supported by AGRA, with Egerton University and the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) as consortium partners.
The primary objective of this collaboration is to address key challenges faced by potato farmers in Laikipia County, such as low productivity, limited access to quality seeds, poor agronomic practices, and inadequate marketing infrastructure. Through this partnership, NPCK and the Laikipia County Government aim to implement sustainable solutions that improve productivity, strengthen market access through contract farming, and create a favorable poclicy environment for the potato sector. By promoting the use of certified seeds, improved farming techniques, and capacity-building programs, the collaboration seeks to enhance productivity among farmers. Additionally, it will focus on establishing structured market linkages and contract farming arrangements to ensure fair prices and stable incomes for farmers. Policy advocacy and regulatory support will also be a critical component of this initiative, aiming to create an enabling environment for the growth of the potato subsector.
The expected outcomes of this partnership include increased potato yields, improved access to high-quality seeds and essential farm inputs, enhanced market opportunities, and policy reforms that support sustainable potato farming. This initiative is set to significantly benefit potato farmers in Laikipia County by boosting their incomes and improving their livelihoods.
