Success in agriculture begins long before the seeds touch the soil—it starts with preparation, planning, and a deep understanding of the land. As we gear up for International Day of Potato, NPCK, in collaboration with partners, is championing the power of proper land preparation and soil testing as vital steps toward achieving bumper harvests.
In readiness for the upcoming International Day of Potato celebrations, which will be held on 29th and 30th May 2025 at KALRO Marindas, Molo, Nakuru County, preparations are in full swing. Demarcation of plots, soil testing, land clearing, and planting activities are currently underway with various partners setting up demonstration fields. These preparations will provide real-time learning experiences for farmers and visitors, showcasing the impact of these often-overlooked practices in transforming yields and improving productivity.

Land preparation is not just about clearing fields—it’s about setting the stage for crop success. Through ploughing, harrowing, leveling, and organic enrichment, farmers create an environment where seed potatoes can thrive. This critical process breaks up compacted soil, enhances water infiltration, incorporates essential nutrients, and helps control weeds and pests. NPCK’s ongoing field demonstrations under the long-rain season campaign are highlighting the importance of preparing land before the rains begin, ensuring even crop stands and healthier tuber development.

Beneath the surface, soil testing reveals the real health of the farm. While soil may look fine on top, its nutrient balance, pH levels, and possible presence of toxic elements can make or break a harvest. Through laboratory analysis, farmers can identify deficiencies and make targeted decisions, whether it’s applying the right type and amount of fertilizer or adjusting the pH for optimal nutrient uptake. As part of KSPI efforts, NPCK and its partners have continued to promote this practice through trainings and community outreach, ensuring that every investment made by a farmer counts.
This year’s International Day of Potato will be a vibrant, two-day celebration packed with learning and collaboration. Farmers, youth, agribusiness professionals, and industry stakeholders are invited to join in activities including on-farm demonstrations, agricultural exhibitions, plenary sessions on critical potato value chain issues, and a dedicated youth forum focused on engaging the next generation through initiatives like the 4K Club. These sessions aim to equip attendees with practical skills and industry insights while fostering partnerships that drive innovation in the sector.
As we prepare for this exciting event, we recognize that bountiful harvests are the result of deliberate and informed actions. Through the integration of proper land preparation and scientific soil testing, farmers can unlock the full potential of their land. NPCK, alongside its partners, continues to empower potato growers with the tools and knowledge to farm smarter, not harder. We invite you to be part of this journey and to join us at KALRO Marindas Molo, Nakuru County, as we celebrate, learn, and grow together.
