The transformation of food systems is critical to achieving sustainable development, improving public health, and addressing the challenges of climate change, food security and safety. It emphasizes on the need for systemic changes that address sustainability, equity, and resilience while ensuring that food systems can meet the needs of a growing global population, growing wealth, changing consumption patterns and globalization. Food system encompasses various aspects, including improving nutrition, enhancing livelihoods, food safety and promoting environmental sustainability.
From 16th to 18th September 2024, a policy framework review was convened by the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR) at Sarova Woodlands in Nakuru. The meeting whose main objective was to shape a comprehensive Food Systems Transformation and finalize the Nairobi City County Policy, brought together key stakeholders from the FST Utafiti Sera House. The policy will address critical aspects such as food handling, transportation, and traceability, which are key to ensuring food safety. The meeting led to development of a detailed policy document for the Nairobi county food system. NPCK, AGRA, the Nairobi County Department of Agriculture, the Consumer Grass Root Association (CGA), farmer groups and private sector actors.
