Editorial

Welcome to the September 2025 edition of the NPCK Newsletter. This issue comes at a pivotal time for the potato sector in Kenya, where innovation, collaboration, and resilience are shaping the future of farming.

From the fight against pesticide resistance in late blight to the introduction of new potato varieties such as Malaika and Glen that tackle the threat of Potato Cyst Nematode, the sector is demonstrating remarkable progress. Partnerships, like the MoU recently signed between NPCK and FIPS Africa, are strengthening the value chain, improving farmer access to quality inputs, and building inclusive opportunities for youth and women.

At the grassroots, farmers in Nandi and Nyandarua are gaining practical knowledge through trainings and field days on soil health, mechanization, and safe use of agrochemicals—empowering them to embrace climate-smart and sustainable practices. Meanwhile, digital innovations like Viazi Soko continue to transform how farmers access certified seed, markets, and advisory services, ensuring they are better connected and more competitive.

We also shine a spotlight on emerging technologies such as apical rooted cuttings, smart cold storage, and mechanized farming—all of which are reducing losses, improving yields, and positioning farmers for long-term success. At the policy and regional level, initiatives to eliminate non-tariff barriers in COMESA and promote horticulture trade underscore the importance of building a competitive regional market for Kenyan produce.

The potato remains more than just a crop—it is a driver of food security, economic growth, and rural transformation. As climate change continues to intensify challenges, adoption of resilient varieties and climate-smart practices will be key to safeguarding farmer livelihoods and strengthening our national food systems.

We invite you to explore the stories, innovations, and partnerships highlighted in this edition, and to join us in building a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable potato industry for Kenya and beyond.
