Checking the seed quality in Freshcrop and Global South Potato group on 31/01/2025
NPCK, through the KSPI project, supports the farmers to access quality potato seed. Fresh Crop Limited and Global South Potato Group are some of potato seed companies that are certified by KEPHIS as seed producers. The activity of checking the quality of the seed is always done during harvesting, sorting, and grading and before the distribution of the seed.
Checking the quality of potato seeds is essential for ensuring healthy plants and a good harvest. Here are the key factors to consider:
- Visual Inspection
- Skin Condition: Look for smooth, intact skin without blemishes, cuts, or signs of rot.
- Size and Shape: Aim for uniform tubers; typically, seed potatoes should weigh between (about 40 to 70 grams).
- Sprouting
- Chitting: Check if the seed potatoes have started to sprout. Healthy sprouts should be short and firm. Avoid tubers with long, spindly sprouts.
- Disease Testing
- Inspect for signs of common diseases, such as:
- Late Blight: Dark spots on the skin or flesh.
- Blackleg: Soft, dark rot at the base of the stem.
- Scab: Rough, corky patches on the skin.
- Moisture Content
- Ensure that the potatoes are not too moist, which can lead to rot. Ideal storage conditions have low humidity.
- Storage Conditions
- Evaluate how the seed potatoes have been stored. They should be kept in a cool, dark, and well-ventilated area to prevent sprouting and decay.
- Size and Uniformity
- Choose seed potatoes that are evenly sized to ensure uniform growth and ease of planting.
- Certification
- Purchase certified seed potatoes from reputable suppliers, as these are often tested for quality and disease.
