The Irish Potato Regulations 2019 were introduced to improve potato quality, protect farmers from exploitation, and strengthen access to better markets. The National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) continues to sensitize farmers and stakeholders on the importance of complying with these regulations to enhance productivity and income within the potato value chain.
One of the key requirements under the regulations is (1) registration. Potato farmers are encouraged to register individually or as part of grower associations with their respective county agriculture departments. Registration supports better planning of production, easier access to extension services, and improved coordination in marketing. Joining farmer groups also enables collective purchase of inputs and strengthens bargaining power during sales.
Another critical requirement is the (2) standard packaging rule. All potatoes must be sold by weight in kilograms and packed in standard 50-kilogram bags. Oversized bags are illegal and may lead to penalties. Standard packaging protects farmers from losses caused by oversized bags and promotes fairness in the trade of potato across markets.
(3) Sorting and grading potatoes before sale is equally important. Clean, well-sorted potatoes attract better prices and meet market quality standards. This practice reduces post-harvest losses and increases the value of produce delivered to buyers.
Farmers are also required to use (4) approved agro-chemicals when controlling pests and diseases. Following label instructions ensures food safety and protects consumer health while maintaining the quality of potatoes. Additionally, potatoes should be transported in (5) clean and enclosed vehicles to protect them from contamination and sunlight exposure. Proper transport helps preserve quality and maintain market value.
Overall, compliance with the Irish Potato Regulations 2019 protects farmers, improves potato quality, reduces losses, and opens access to more reliable markets. By following these guidelines, farmers and traders contribute to a more organized potato industry that supports stable incomes, food security, and improved livelihoods.
