NPCK strengthens VBA capacity on quality seed and safe pest management

The National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK), in collaboration with AAK-GROW/CropLife Kenya, conducted a training for Village-Based Advisors (VBAs) in Elburgon on 9 September 2026. The training focused on strengthening the capacity of VBAs to support farmers with access to quality potato seed, safe use of pest control products and improved production practices.

A total of 29 VBAs participated in the training, which provided practical knowledge on the use of Viazi Soko, a digital platform that facilitates access to certified potato seed and other agricultural services. The training emphasized the importance of farmers obtaining certified seed through the platform as a key step towards improving seed quality and productivity in potato production.

The VBAs were also trained on the safe handling, application, storage and disposal of pest control products. The sessions emphasized responsible use of these products to protect farmers, consumers and the environment while promoting effective pest management.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was highlighted as an important component of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). The approach encourages farmers to combine appropriate pest management methods while using pest control products responsibly and only when necessary.

Through the training, the VBAs were equipped with knowledge and practical skills to better advise farmers within their areas of operation. Their strengthened capacity is expected to contribute to improved access to quality seed, responsible pest management and the adoption of good agricultural practices across the potato value chain.

The training forms part of ongoing efforts by NPCK and its partners to strengthen farmer advisory services and promote sustainable potato production through improved access to information, technologies and quality agricultural inputs.
