As we conclude the month of November, the potato industry continues to demonstrate resilience and progress through strong partnerships, improved farmer capacity, and renewed efforts to strengthen seed systems. This edition highlights key developments across counties, ongoing disease management efforts, and new opportunities within the value chain.
A major focus this month is Blackleg disease, a persistent bacterial threat that affects productivity and seed quality. With its rapid spread and strict zero-tolerance under seed certification, Blackleg remains a high-priority concern for farmers, regulators, and seed producers. Through the use of certified seed, proper farm hygiene, and improved agronomic practices, we can collectively reduce its impact and safeguard the sector.
We are pleased to feature impactful activities in Nandi County, where farmer field days, crop insurance training, and the establishment of demonstration plots are enhancing farmers’ knowledge and resilience. These initiatives continue to strengthen last-mile extension services and promote the adoption of certified seed and climate-smart technologies.
In addition, Laikipia County has made significant strides with the development of its Potato Strategy 2026–2030. The strategy aligns with national frameworks and sets a clear roadmap for enhancing productivity, market access, and policy implementation over the next five years. This milestone marks an important step towards coordinated investments and a more competitive county-level value chain.
Finally, NPCK is pleased to announce a job opportunity within the seed sector. The position of Seed Potato Officer (Re-advertisement) offers an exciting chance to support and strengthen Kenya’s seed potato production and certification systems. Qualified and passionate professionals are encouraged to apply.
As NPCK, we remain committed to supporting farmers, county governments, and partners in building an innovative, inclusive, and sustainable potato industry. Thank you for your continued collaboration and dedication.
Enjoy this edition, and let us remain united in driving transformation across the potato value chain.
