SEED POTATO PRODUCERS MEETING HELD 10TH FEBRUARY 2023

Access to certified seed potatoes remains a major issue in the potato industry. The majority of potato growers continue to rely on farm-saved seeds for potato production, which does not guarantee good returns and is prone to spreading diseases and pests. To counter this NPCK, CIP, KEPHIS, KALRO, seed producers and other key partners have been undertaking several initiatives to improve farmers’ access to high quality seed potato. In this background, on 10th February 2023, NPCK convened a Seed Potato Producers Meeting to discuss seed availability for the on-coming long rain planting season, how to improve certified seed potato production, and agree on areas requiring support to ensure farmers get quality seeds at the right time. The meeting offered seed producers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of regulations for vegetatively propagating seeds. Various recommendations were raised by the participants; of which some will be used to inform development of the regulations. In attendance were: FreshCrop Ltd, Agrico PSA, KALRO, ADC, Kisima Farm, Kirinyaga Seeds Ltd, CIP, Agrivine Africa, Kevian Kenya, Rosentbelt ltd, Utopian Ltd, and NPCK.
